President Eisenhower, nervous about surprise nuclear attack by the Soviets, getting even more nervous about quick Soviet achievements. CIA pilot Francis Gary Powers, on a top secret mission, had to fly over denied territory and photograph from his U-2 spy plane, deep in Russia. On the morning of May 1, 1960, while the mission had taken place Power's U-2 plane been shot down by a surface to air missile. The entire U-2 program did not know about Power's secret mission and fate which turned into a mystery for days.
